At least 3 nurses in Puerto Rico test Positive for COVID-19

The Labor Unit of Nurses and Health Employees raised the alert by an inspection of the authorities in the hospitals, alleging that they know of at least three (3) professional Nurses who tested positive for the coronavirus COVID- 19.

The union’s director, José Díaz, indicated that he has information from at least three nursing professionals who were infected with the novel virus.

Likewise, he pointed out that there are close to fifty professionals of direct assistance to patients who are out of their jobs due to precautionary measures when they suspect exposure to contagion.

“Many are working without the equipment and conditions they need to ensure their safety,” added the director of ULEES, who represents over 2,000 private hospital employees who serve as nurses, medical record professionals, medical technologists and cafeteria workers, among others.

The union issued a press release last night calling on Governor Wanda Vázquez to “appoint an evaluation commission to visit private hospitals, without prior notice, to ensure that the staff working there are being provided with the tools and equipment necessary to deal with this emergency. ”

“These are the ones in the front row, facing this deadly virus, and the least this government should do is make sure they are protected as they should be, not just for their well-being, but also for the safety of patients and the welfare of these workers, “he added.

Díaz indicated that for privacy reasons he could not enter details of identities or the places where they work.

“We can say that we know of three positives and there are already some 45 to 50 retirements from their jobs,” he maintained.

He added that nurses “continue to care for patients, but there is no way of knowing who has it (COVID-19) and who does not. Perhaps now it will improve when rapid tests come and in less than a day it will be known, but what That doesn’t change is the situation they’re working on. We can’t fight the pandemic like this. “
