Jones Act waiver expired and won’t be renewed

The temporary exemption to the Jones Act, which would allow vessels from anywhere in the world to reach the island to distribute supplies and aid, has expired and will not be extended.

According to Reuters, a spokesman for the National Security Department confirmed that it would not be extended.

The exemption expired Sunday night.

The exemption had come into effect on September 28, following a request from Puerto Rico’s governor, Ricardo Rossello, and under pressure from several congressmen, including Senator John McCain.
