The head of the Police Dept. of Puerto Rico, mentioned that the cuts to the budget of the Puerto Rico Police did not made any difference, however, a call was launched looking for citizens who want to serve as police officers without pay or any compensation at all.
300 volunteers are being sought for the Auxiliary Police program that has existed since 1999.
Some 62 volunteer police officers were certified in October. They have no compensation except being covered by the State Insurance Fund, as any police officer would be, in the event of an accident or tragedy during working hours.
These auxiliary agents receive less rigorous training than a regular agent, however they could be armed if required by the Superintendent.
Generally, the work of these agents is to serve as support and they have patrol duties but they are trained like any other agent in arrest techniques among others.
To participate in this program you must be a minimum of 19 years of age and a maximum of 65, be an American citizen, not be an official or candidate for elective positions or any municipal, state or federal agency, among other requirements.
