Amidst the backdrop of the historic Sugar Mill, Mayor Lornna Soto Villanueva was inaugurated on Tuesday evening for her third term as the chief executive of the Autonomous Municipality of Canóvanas.

“I pledged to serve you with integrity and honesty, adhering to our local and federal Constitutions, along with the laws and ordinances, as well as the Municipal Code of Puerto Rico,” said Soto Villanueva. “My spirit is revitalized with the same enthusiasm I experienced in 2014, when I first took the oath to start my role as mayor. I am deeply honored by the faith our citizens place in our efforts and promises, aware of the current challenges we all acknowledge. But I also remain hopeful as I gaze towards the future with great optimism.”

Soto Villanueva referred to the Old Sugar Mill of Canóvanas as a testament to economic strength, commercial prowess, labor, and the echo of former glories, emphasizing that the site today symbolizes resilience that aptly represents Canóvanas’ legacy of improvement. The northern central town’s administration plans to transform it into a cornerstone for tourism, urban, and cultural development.

“The chimney that has withstood the test of time, Hurricane Maria, numerous natural events, and even the pandemic stands firm,” the mayor stated. “In seeing it, I feel the strength of the trust and support I’ve been given to guide the future of this cherished city. A responsibility that we have embraced vigorously over the past decade. Today, with genuine humility and immense pride, I can tell you that I have worked relentlessly, confronting challenges and striving towards goals; facing unexpected circumstances brought about by nature’s fury; in times of calm and in times of discord … and with steadfast determination, I am ready to honor this role for four additional years with perseverance, dedication, and resolve.”

A firm advocate for youth and their pivotal role in establishing Canóvanas as a regional leader, Soto Villanueva stressed the necessity for every demographic and social sector to engage in these efforts, sharing ideas, proposing solutions, and participating in the implementation of the government’s agenda.
