More than $8.7 million in federal funds allocated to Puerto Rico will be directed towards the repair of infrastructure, fostering scientific advancement, and enhancing higher education across the island, announced Gov. Jenniffer González Colón on Wednesday.
A significant portion of the total $8,738,425.57 is sourced from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through sections 406 and 407 of the Stafford Act.
These funds are designated for restoring essential infrastructure and clearing debris in municipalities affected by hurricanes Maria and Fiona in 2017.
Ciales will receive more than $1.7 million for long-term repairs to highways and bridges that were damaged by Hurricane Maria, while Naranjito is set to get over $2.8 million for rural road repairs impacted by Hurricane Fiona.
Additionally, the Puerto Rico Science and Research Trust will obtain $100,000 for the project titled “Puerto Rican Higher Education Assembly of Researchers, Thriving Not Just Surviving,” which is a conference focused on promoting success for students in higher education.
