On Wednesday, District 37 Representative Carmen Medina Calderón declared the allocation of $90,000 aimed at procuring rip rap stones as part of an initiative to alleviate the impacts of coastal erosion in Parcelas Suárez, a neighborhood in Loíza that suffered from storm surge last Saturday.
“We have swiftly mobilized these resources to aid in curbing the sea from further encroaching on several streets in Parcelas Suárez,” stated Medina, noting that the initiative encompasses the establishment of a rock platform, typically called a revetment, as a temporary solution while the United States Army Corps of Engineers examines the area.
The legislator advised the Land Authority to reallocate funds for the procurement of essential materials, working in conjunction with Loíza Mayor Julia Nazario Fuentes and other officials. It is anticipated that the project will directly benefit the 47 inhabitants of the community.
Senate Vice President Marissa “Marissita” Jiménez Santoni supported the initiative, highlighting the necessity for an urgent solution while federal authorities finalize their evaluations. Senator Héctor Joaquin Sánchez was also involved in discussions regarding the collaborative effort to safeguard the residents of Parcelas Suárez and the adjacent coastline.
