Nearly two weeks into her tenure, Gov. Jenniffer González Colón has not yet determined who will succeed Col. Antonio López Figueroa as the new police commissioner.
When queried about this issue during the inauguration ceremony for Gurabo Mayor Rosacheli Rivera, the governor stated she is seeking advice from federal officials concerning the appointment.
“We are continuing to assess applicants for various government roles,” the governor remarked. “Regarding the police, we await direction from the federal agency, but there is an acting commissioner in position who has our complete support to fulfill his responsibilities.”
During a TV appearance on Jan. 2, while traveling from the Capitol to La Fortaleza, González Colón suggested that she had made a selection for a successor, indicating that the individual is known publicly. Nevertheless, no formal announcement followed six rounds of appointments at press events, wherein she designated Brig. Gen. Arturo Garffer as secretary of the Department of Public Safety.
The four police unions have united in their appeal to the governor to name a police commissioner, ideally someone from within the police service.
