Executive order by itself will not put a stop to gender violence, governor states

---

Governor Jenniffer González Colón states that addressing the issue of gender violence demands more than merely issuing an executive order that announces a state of emergency in Puerto Rico.

“In the case of violence, no document can assure that ‘tomorrow there will be no murders.’ If it were that straightforward, I would implement it immediately,” the governor remarked late last week. “What is crucial for me at this point is the selection of the women’s advocate, who must possess strong leadership qualities. I will appoint Justice Secretary Janet Parra to collaborate with victims and execute [policies], as she oversaw this division within the Department of Justice, which are essential and vital to address the issue of gender violence.”

“Whether we declare an executive order or not regarding this, I will assess,” González Colón further commented. “I am not ruling it out, but I need to determine at this moment if it is necessary.”
