As part of Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo’s initiative to bolster the San Juan police force to address the security and protection needs of residents and property in the capital, a ceremony was held this week at the Tapia Theater to celebrate the graduation of 42 new cadets from the Municipal Police Academy.
“We acknowledge the dedication and effort of each cadet in achieving this important milestone,” said Romero Lugo in a statement on Tuesday. “We gratefully and hopefully honor their bravery in dedicating themselves to the service of all citizens of San Juan. For our administration, ensuring resources for the safety of all San Juan residents is a priority; our San Juan Municipal Police continues to advance with the addition of 42 new officers.”
During the event, three awards were presented for the top three scores in various categories: Academic GPA, Shooting Level I, and Shooting Level III.
For the Academic GPA category, the bronze medal, with a GPA of 3.87, was awarded to Cadet Priscilla J. Báez Delgado, the silver medal, also with a GPA of 3.87, went to Cadet Amarilis D. Vélez, and the gold medal, with a GPA of 3.97, was presented to Cadet Brandon S. Marrero Rodríguez.
In Shooting Level I, the bronze medal was won by Cadet Alejandro Andújar Martínez, while the silver medal went to Cadet Brandon Marrero Rodríguez. For Shooting Level III, Cadet Perty Medina Martínez received the bronze medal, and Cadet Jean O. Pérez Ortiz took home the silver medal.
The training course for this academy lasted 31 weeks, starting on March 18 of this year. Upon completing the 160 hours of training, the cadets are incorporated into the municipal police force, at a cost of $5,258 per cadet.
As of now, the San Juan Municipal Police comprises 715 members in the rank structure. Although this marks the 47th graduating class from the San Juan Municipal Police Academy, it is the fifth class under the current Romero Lugo administration. Through these last five academies, 178 individuals have joined the police force during the current four-year term.
The direct investment in the municipal police surpasses $20 million and includes the acquisition of 150 patrol vehicles, along with the renovation and construction of two new police stations.
