Yule bonus distributed to public sector workers

On Tuesday, Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia declared that the Christmas Bonus payment for public employees of the Government of Puerto Rico has already been credited to their accounts.

“Due to the fiscal prudence of this administration, we have managed not only to meet the legally established Christmas bonus but also to provide an additional amount, enhancing the financial well-being of our workers and their families this Christmas season,” the governor stated in a written announcement. “This demonstrates our dedication to honoring the hard work and commitment of every public servant.”

According to Pierluisi, public servants have received a $1,000 bonus, which comprises the $600 Christmas Bonus mandated by law, along with an extra $400 from the Debt Adjustment Plan (PAD in Spanish).

Additionally, the governor revealed the allocation of a $200 Christmas Bonus for 113,739 pensioners and other recipients of the central government, educators, and judiciary retirement systems, amounting to a total distribution of approximately $23.4 million.

“The issuance of the Christmas Bonus to our pensioners highlights this administration’s dedication to those who devoted their lives to public service,” Pierluisi remarked. “This accomplishment is achievable thanks to responsible fiscal management that enables us to meet our obligations and provide significant benefits to our retirees.”

This benefit encompasses 82,624 pensioners from the central government, 30,699 from the Teachers’ Retirement System, and 416 from the judiciary who retired on or before March 15, 2022.

Luis M. Collazo Rodríguez, executive director of the Government Retirement Board, emphasized that this bonus is in addition to other benefits like the $100 Medication Bonus and the $100 contribution to the medical plan.

“This payment reinforces public policy supporting former public servants who helped shape the Puerto Rico we recognize today,” he stated.
