On Monday, Senator Debbie Stabenow, chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, unveiled the Democratic iteration of the Farm Bill, which features a provision that enables Puerto Rico to shift to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Luis Dávila Pernas, executive director of PRFAA, underscored the significance of this legislative milestone for families in Puerto Rico and acknowledged the collaborative efforts that facilitated this inclusion in the Farm Bill. He affirmed that PRFAA would continue its collaboration with Congress and other partners to guarantee this provision’s place in the final Farm Bill.
“Today marks a monumental occasion for Puerto Rico. The inclusion of the transition to SNAP in the Democratic Farm Bill proposal stems from years of relentless advocacy to ensure our citizens have access to vital resources to fight food insecurity. We are profoundly grateful to Senator Debbie Stabenow for her steadfast commitment to social justice, and to the Democratic leadership in the Senate for recognizing the critical nature of this initiative for countless Puerto Rican households. I also wish to commend the relentless efforts of Governor Pedro Pierluisi and Governor-elect and Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón, who have tirelessly advocated in the Federal Capital for initiatives that directly support our community,” Dávila Pernas stated in a press release.
