The University of Puerto Rico (UPR) has launched its online application system for the academic term commencing in August 2025, as announced in a statement on Thursday.

Candidates can finalize their applications by January 22, 2025, via the portal admisiones.upr.edu, which now includes a new digital feature designed to enhance access to information: an interactive chatbot.

This chatbot, utilizing generative artificial intelligence, incorporates all official details regarding the admissions procedures at UPR, including requirements, important dates, academic offerings, and more. With this cutting-edge technology, the university is taking a significant stride toward improving student services through digital innovation. Furthermore, it delivers a rapid and precise orientation experience for those aspiring to begin or advance their academic journey at the premier university in the Caribbean, as acknowledged by the QS Rankings 2025.

This year, UPR has accelerated the application process to facilitate better planning for students.

“At the University of Puerto Rico, we are dedicated to ensuring access to top-tier education, which distinguishes us as the island’s primary institution for teaching and research,” stated UPR President Luis Ferrao Delgado. “In this significant context, we have enacted important changes to guarantee that our students experience the unique offerings that only UPR can provide.”

Ferrao expressed hope that the number of applicants will exceed last year’s figures.

Ivonne Calderón, director of the Admissions Office, remarked, “Applicants can choose up to three academic programs in their applications, listed in order of preference.”

“These choices can be from the same campus or various units, enhancing admission opportunities,” she noted.

The portal admisiones.upr.edu not only enables students to submit their applications but also provides details about the new admissions policy for incoming students, which allows for requests for admission via one of the sanctioned pathways: traditional and non-traditional.

For the non-traditional pathway, applicants are required to have a minimum GPA of 2.00, and taking the entrance exam is not obligatory. They are encouraged to seek guidance from the admissions offices.

Dr. Mayra Charriez, Vice President of Student Affairs, emphasized that “every qualified student who fulfills the admission criteria will be granted acceptance post-evaluation of their application. Those who are near meeting the requirements will be placed on a waiting list with the chance to request reconsideration.”

As part of its recruitment and admissions initiatives, the UPR va pa’ Plaza event is scheduled for December 6, 7, and 8 on the second level of Plaza Las Américas in front of Starbucks. During this event, students will have the opportunity to complete their admission applications and explore available financial aid options.
