Once again, Puerto Rico has cast its vote in favor of statehood, with nearly 57% (56.82%) opting for statehood rather than independence or free association.
Currently classified as a territory of the United States, a majority of Puerto Ricans expressed their desire to change this status in November 2020, with 53% voting “Yes” in a statehood referendum.
Referenda in 2012 and 2017 also confirmed statehood as the favored option among the three possible status choices.
While voter ballots do not allow for explanations of choices, various arguments supporting statehood have emerged over the years:
- The democratic values of the United States necessitate acknowledgment of the Puerto Rican people’s vote.
- As citizens of the United States, Puerto Ricans deserve equal rights.
- The principle of no taxation without representation should be upheld by the United States.
- “Enhanced commonwealth” proposals are misleading and unconstitutional for the voters of Puerto Rico.
- The current territorial status contributes to violence in Puerto Rico.
- Puerto Rico’s status has implications for the security of the United States.
- Stability and overall benefits could be brought to Puerto Rico’s economy.
- An improved economy in Puerto Rico would also positively impact the United States.
- Puerto Ricans are migrating to the mainland, where they enjoy voting rights, often leaving parts of their Puerto Rican heritage behind.
- During election campaigns, both parties professed to endorse the self-determination of Puerto Rico.
The decision now lies with Congress. Historically, every U.S. territory that has sought statehood has been welcomed into the Union. Will Puerto Rico be an exception?
