Genera PR selects Tesla Puerto Rico for battery systems to stabilize the grid

---

On Monday, Genera PR revealed its plans to acquire battery energy storage systems (BESS) from Tesla Puerto Rico LLC to bolster the island’s electrical grid.

This BESS initiative is vital for the stabilization and enhancement of Puerto Rico’s energy network, featuring a storage capability of 430 megawatts, which is equivalent to 1,720 megawatt-hours of energy over four hours, to be implemented across six key locations.

These systems will facilitate a 90% reduction in load shifting and introduce a rapidly responsive rotating reserve for essential circumstances. The approval and signing of the contract will require final consent from the Financial Oversight and Management Board along with the Public-Private Partnerships Authority.

Iván Báez, the vice president of corporate affairs at Genera PR, remarked, “this represents a crucial advancement in the effort to modernize Puerto Rico’s electrical system.”

“The installation of these BESS units will guarantee enhanced stability and responsiveness of the grid, enabling us to meet energy demands and address unexpected issues within the system,” he stated. “Moreover, incorporating this cutting-edge technology will lessen our reliance on pricier and less efficient units, resulting in considerable savings.”

Following the requisite approvals from the appropriate bodies, Tesla Puerto Rico will finalize the contract specifics prior to commencing the installation phase. Genera PR has initiated the permit process for land preparation at the facilities where the units will be set up, including locations in Vega Baja, Cambalache, Costa Sur, San Juan, Palo Seco, Yabucoa, and Aguirre.

This project, backed by a $760 million investment from federal funds, is set to begin operations by the conclusion of 2025.
