New record for high temperature established in San Juan

From The Star Staff

On Tuesday, the San Juan metropolitan area reached a new temperature record for consecutive days over 90°F, totaling 37 days, as reported by the National Weather Service (NWS).

On Monday, the temperature in the San Juan metro area once again exceeded 90°F, according to the NWS in San Juan. This rise allowed the capital of Puerto Rico to match the former record of 36 consecutive days with maximum temperatures over 90°F, set in June and July of 2012.

As temperatures climbed above 90°F once more on Tuesday, San Juan established a new milestone of 37 consecutive days of significantly high temperatures. This achievement emphasizes the necessity for both authorities and citizens to keep monitoring and preparing for the effects of the extreme weather that has affected much of the island in recent weeks.

The extended duration of extreme heat has prompted concerns from climate experts, who suggest that such sustained occurrences might be linked to global warming trends. Furthermore, authorities have raised alarms about the potential impacts on public health, particularly for the most vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children, who are at a higher risk of experiencing heat stroke and other heat-related complications.

The NWS highlighted the importance of remaining hydrated, limiting direct sun exposure, and finding refuge in cool and well-ventilated spaces.
