Tropical Storm Kirk develops close to the Cape Verde Islands

Tropical Storm Kirk emerged on Monday, marking the 11th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season and the fourth in just a week—beginning with Helene, which resulted in over 100 fatalities and widespread devastation from Florida to North Carolina.

Currently, it is situated far out in the open Atlantic waters, but experts from the National Hurricane Center predict it may intensify into a significant hurricane within the coming days.

This season was anticipated to be notably active, though it was mainly marked by a prolonged period of inactivity during much of August and September. However, activity surged last week, with Hurricane Helene striking Florida late Thursday as a fierce and damaging Category 4 storm. Additionally, Hurricane Isaac and Tropical Storm Joyce developed within a few days of one another last week, although neither posed a threat to land.
