Agent Waldemar Burgos Rodríguez, who was injured on Saturday during an intervention at the Vista Hermosa residential complex in San Juan, continues to show improvement, Police Commissioner Antonio López Figueroa reported Monday. Initially, he was so critically injured that his life support was going to be disconnected.

Now, He is responding to the commands that are being given to him, he opened his eyes, moved his limbs. Thanks to the prayers that all the people of Puerto Rico have put in for Waldemar to get up and be with us again,” shared López Figueroa in an interview.

Agent Burgos Rodríguez, from the San Juan Motorized Unit, was seriously injured in the early hours of Saturday, after a pursuit of three individuals that began on Jesús T. Piñeiro Avenue and ended at the Vista Hermosa residential complex.

According to López Figueroa, the third suspect to surrender to the authorities last night, identified as Pedro Víctor Nieves Hernández, 23, had shot at police officers in a previous incident that occurred in 2019.

He pointed out that this case did not go to trial, which is why he was free.

The events of Saturday occurred at about 1:26 a.m., when agents Burgos Rodríguez and Yomara Valle Rivera carried out a preventive patrol in the area of Jesús T. Piñeiro avenue. There, they noticed that the driver of a Toyota RAV4 SUV passed a red traffic light.

The occupants of the vehicle ignored the instructions of the police officers who ordered them to stop, thus initiating a chase along De Diego Avenue, in Puerto Nuevo, to the Vista Hermosa caserío.

Two of the suspects, Miguel A. Forteza Ramos and Víctor Santana Hernández, were arrested on Saturday after an extensive police operation together with the FBI. The third defendant, Nieves Hernández, turned himself in on Sunday night at the San Juan Court.
