2 year-old intoxicated with Cocaine in San Juan

A two-year-old infant was in a coma in a pediatric hospital, where the tests carried out showed that he suffered cocaine intoxication.

Police officers in conjunction with personnel of Sexual Crimes and Child Abuse of the San Juan CIC, went to the mother’s apartment in the Ernesto Ramos Antonini Caserío, in Río Piedras, to remove his 5-year-old sister and 7-year old brother from her custody.

According to reports, at around 10:00 last Wednesday night, the mother identified as Perla Canela Englant, 25, took the child to a hospital in Hato Rey, where he appeared to have no vital signs.

Doctors found no signs of violence or malnutrition. His lips were purple and according to his mother he was healthy.

The infant had apparently fallen asleep in the living room playing with a cell phone and when the mother went to take him to the room, she noticed that he was not responding and that his lips were purple.

The doctors who treated him, seeing that he had a breath of life, arranged for his immediate transfer to a specialized institution. He was taken to an intensive care room and hooked up to a ventilator, but he was diagnosed brain dead on Sunday and disconnected from the ventilator.

The Institute of Forensic Sciences (ICF) carried out an autopsy on the corpse of the 2-year-old boy who allegedly died of cocaine poisoning.

Investigators have not been able to determine how the cocaine got into the mother’s apartment.

The executive director of the Institute of Forensic Sciences (ICF), María Conte Miller reported today that the results of the autopsy performed on the body of the 2-year-old boy who arrived at a hospital intoxicated by cocaine will not be disclosed, due to an investigation in course on what happened.
