Suspect Arrested/Charged with fatal shooting during Puerto Rican Day parade

Anthony Lorenzi

Chicago Police reported today that they arrested a suspect in the murder of Yasmín Pérez and Gyovanni “Gyo” Arzuaga, a Puerto Rican couple who were enjoying a Puerto Rican parade in Humboldt Park when they were shot on June 20.

According to authorities, 34-year-old Anthony Lorenzi was arrested Friday night in San Diego, California in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Subsequently, he was charged with first degree murder.

In a press conference, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown explained that Lorenzi fled to California after the shooting, but was located through Chicago police surveillance. The defendant has had 26 felony arrests and seven convictions.

“We will do everything we can to find criminals who commit crimes in Chicago,” Brown said. “There is nowhere to run. There is nowhere to hide. We will find you. We will do everything possible to make sure that happens. “

Pérez, 23, and Arzuaga, 24, were shot after what police called a minor traffic accident on Saturday night, June 19, on West Division Street in Humboldt Park.

Authorities say several men ambushed the couple in the middle of the street. The incident was captured on a video that went viral.

Arzuaga died Sunday night at the Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center as a result of the shots received, while Pérez died on the morning of Tuesday, June 22, at Stroger Hospital.

Both were parents to a girl and a boy.
