The Puerto Rico Police is trying to identify the person who organized the illegal meeting of motorists who stopped traffic yesterday on the Las Américas expressway in Río Piedras.
This was reported by the director of the Uniformed Traffic Bureau, Inspector Gaby Pérez Cintrón.
“What we have is that a young man, nicknamed ‘Mezclita’, summoned his followers to a motorboat race and they met on the PR-18 express, through the Medical Center, and from there they left in the direction of Caguas”, Perez said. “This is a serious violation.”
“As soon as we found out, he dispatched our staff, but when he arrived, they were already gone. They left fast. In any case, some of them were followed up and intervened at different points, issuing a total of 99 tickets for violations of traffic laws, “added Pérez Cintrón.
The situation was denounced on social networks by citizens who observed how the crowding of motorcycles stopped traffic in that area of the highway, at the exit of the Río Piedras Medical Center, in a north-south direction.
Pérez Cintrón assured that as soon as they found out, they mobilized the units that were activated in a transit plan related to demonstrations that had been called in the Capitol and the Fortress. “That delayed us from being able to address this situation,” he explained.
Noting that they did not see calls for this activity, Pérez Cintrón revealed that the Police did prevent an activity that the same person had called the night before in Hato Rey from taking place.
“This time he took us by surprise, but previously we had avoided other activities that he had called,” the officer maintained.
He added that “for the previous day, April 17 at night, he had made a call to meet in the parking lot of the Burlington store in Plaza Las Américas. “We established a preventive patrol and prevented the bullfight from taking place,” he added. “They intervened with his followers who arrived. 49 fines were issued ”.
The inspector assured that the work plan announced yesterday, Sunday, by the Police Commissioner, Antonio López Figueroa, consists of “monitoring these people, identifying them and giving them follow-up to prevent these things from happening.”
According to Pérez Cintrón, at the moment they do not have information to determine why the group stopped traffic in that place.
“Everything is under investigation. At the moment we are trying to find the full name of this person to search for background and other aspects of the investigation, “he said.
Yesterday, the Police Commissioner thanked the public for the videos and their publication on the networks, but made a call so that in situations like these they immediately call the 9-1-1 Emergency System.
He indicated that “the duration of these events requires that we can act with immediacy.”
