The authorities reopened this morning the Luis Muñoz Marín international airport (SJU), after terminals B and C of the facilities were evacuated after the activation of the explosives protocol.
The authorities determined, after two hours, that it was a false alarm.
The director of operations of Aerostar, Nelman Nevárez, pointed out to questions from the press that the situation developed after a Puerto Rico Police dog marked as positive for explosives a suitcase that a traveler left unattended near the registration area of American Airlines.
“This morning around 7:40 a.m. there was an alert of an unattended suitcase in front of the American Airlines counters. The security protocols were activated and it gave an alert by which the protocol to work was activated, ”Nevárez explained as the passengers returned to the interior of the facilities.
The traveler was scheduled travel on American Airlines.
“She (the passenger) did go to claim it, but the protocol was already established so you have to make sure first before returning the same,” said Nevárez.
The interviewee explained that explosives personnel from the Police opened the suitcase for its respective review, but after the evaluation the result was negative.
Nevárez, however, could not specify why at first a K-9 of the Uniformed determined that there was some type of explosive inside the suitcase.
Earlier, the Aerostar press spokeswoman, Damarisse Martínez, told the press that the flights were not canceled, but there was a delay in the registration of passengers in terminals B and C of the airport.
