Leading the nationwide polls in the US, Senator Bernie Sanders (Vermont) is the presidential candidate who has raised the most money in Puerto Rico and has the largest number of donors.
According to the most recent data from the Federal Election Commission (FEC), until December 31, Senator Sanders had raised $ 27,391 – almost $ 5,000 more than former Vice President Joseph Biden -, through 1,059 donations.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York who has already allocated about $ 400 million in the first months of his campaign, does not raise money from taxpayers. With a fortune of $ 60,000 million, the expenses of his candidacy come out of his pocket.
Meanwhile, Biden has 56 donations totaling $ 22,539.
His donors include María Elena Carrión ($ 2,800), and personalities of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) such as José Alfredo Hernández Mayoral ($ 1,000), the former secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs (DACO) Pedro Ortiz Alvarez ($ 1,000), the former Senator Roberto Prats ($ 825) and former first lady Wilma Pastrana ($ 250).
The collections are followed by Sanders and Biden – very close to each other – Senator Elizabeth Warren ($ 11,561 from 151 donations) and Peter Buttigieg ($ 11,489, from 107 donations).
Warren has among its donors the director of Public Policy of the Center for a New Economy (CNE), Sergio Marxuach, as a “private citizen”, who has contributed $ 350.
The other presidential precandidate who technically remains in the contest – although it has been left out of the debates and the attention of public opinion – and has received funds from the island, is Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii), with $ 6,179.
On the Republican side, President Donald Trump has only motivated eight people on the island to give funds to his electoral committee. In total, he only has $ 2,280 in contributions from residents of Puerto Rico, including businessman John Regis, who led his campaign committee on the island in 2016 and has sent him $ 60.
Neither billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer nor Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar (Minnesota) has received donations from voters on the island.
