Several tremors have been felt throughout the island today. According to the USGS, the first quake was registered six miles from the southern municipality at around 6:30pm. Previously, it had been reported that the preliminary magnitude was 5.1.
“It was felt strongly because it was in shallow depth,” meteorologist Ada Monzón said through a video report posted on social media.
“It was in the southern part of Puerto Rico and that’s why people from Ponce to the Mayagüez municipalities have felt them quite strong,” she added.
The meteorologist stressed that a tremor like the one reported does not cause a tsunami warning to be issued for the island.
“The Puerto Rico tsunami protocol, which is activated when there is a tremor of 7.1 and up and it was 5.1,” she explained.
Immediately, no damage or incidents related to the tremor have been reported, Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced reported on social media.
