Puerto Rican parade in Boston celebrates unity and resilience


Thousands who celebrated the 51st annual Puerto Rican festival and parade in downtown Boston on Sunday wanted to show the world what it looks like when Puerto Rico “se levanta” — when Puerto Rico rises.

Organizers dedicated this year’s events to those who suffered after Hurricane Maria devastated the island nearly a year ago on Sept. 20, leaving residents without power and water. Much of the weekend’s festivities, from the flag raising on Friday to the music on Saturday, focused on unity, said Edwin Alicea, president of the Puerto Rican Festival of Massachusetts.
